Our History

Homeless Action Sonoma (HAS) began with founder Annie Falandes’ committed to helping local homeless individuals, starting with Sunday BBQ dinners at her home. One of the first people she supported was Bob, who had been homeless for over 25 years. Through HAS’ Befriending Program, Marie Koller, now Director of Operations, helped Bob secure long – overdue veterans’ benefits and stable housing-an approach that continues to this day.

In 2020, HAS became a 501(c ) (3) nonprofit, securing property at 18820 Hwy 12 in Sonoma. With the generous help of a loan from Peter Fazio and later Steve Latimere, plans were set in motion to build a permanent shelter for up to 50 individuals. In the meantime, HAS purchased 20 tiny homes, with Quick Haven providing five and Steve Jaca constructing the remaining 17, including two office spaces. By July 2023, the tiny home village was complete, followed by a bathroom, shower, and laundry facility in November. HAS has quickly filled the units and began providing essential services to help residents transition toward stability.

HAS remains committed to growth and sustainability.

We have reached remarkable milestones in addressing homelessness

Since 2020, we assembled a volunteer board of directors, launched the Sonoma Shares program to connect local professionals with our clients, and secured community funding to purchase a property in Boyes Hot Springs. Following County requirements, we improved the site by grading the land, adding retaining walls, fencing, and rainwater management systems, and installing new water, sewer, and electrical infrastructure.

We built, painted, and installed 22 tiny homes, creating the Home and Safe Village 2022, complete with bathrooms, showers, and a laundry room for residents and unsheltered clients. Leadership transitions included James becoming Board Chair, Ted succeeding Annie as President, and Marie joining as Director of Operations.

Generous support from grants—including contributions from Sonoma Valley Community Foundation, Catalyst Fund, Impact100, Rotary Club, United Way, and others—enabled us to fund capital projects and operations. Partnerships with nonprofits such as Sonoma Valley Community Health Center, SOS, La Luz, Hanna Center, FISH, and Pets Lifeline allowed us to deliver comprehensive services.

By 2024, we had operated a winter warming station and navigation center, served X clients, housed X individuals, transitioned X clients into permanent housing, and provided mental health assessments and referrals. We also offered casework for public benefits, healthcare, and ID assistance, built a dog run for clients with pets, hosted neighborhood cleanups, and served X Sunday dinners for the community—a tradition that continues today.
